Why Women Go to the Restroom Together

A couple of years ago, I found myself in a heated debate with a guy in my martial arts class who was upset his wife didn’t want to go to the store unless he went with her.

I mentioned women don’t like going into dark parking lots alone at night because it wasn’t safe — and grocery stores usually require you walk quite a ways to your car.

The number one place women are abducted from/attacked is grocery store parking lots. Number two is office parking lots/garages. Number three is public restrooms. (And women instinctively know this.)

Even though I did not know his wife, I felt the need to help her.

“That’s why women go to the restroom in pairs,” I said. “It’s not to socialize, it’s because we have been conditioned to seek out the company of others as a form of protection especially in situations where we are exposed.”

The guy strongly disagreed. “I seriously doubt every women is walking around terrified.”

I pointed out that I wasn’t talking about “fear”, but an alertness women held, a sense of vigilance anytime we ventured out at night.

He announced that no female he knew felt this way including his wife, mother or sisters. I asked how he knew since none of his family was there.
