One of the most important things I learned was that these voters took Trump seriously but not literally because he appeared to stand up for their pain, grievance, and disaffection. They didn’t read much into his tweets nor the hyperbole of his rally speeches.

Trump played them. Because they selfishly got what they wanted, they ignored the worst of him.
