Oh, you’re new to Medium? My apologies, Jeff. You apparently don’t understand the culture of the platform. These people aren’t arrogant. They are writers.

A couple of things:

  1. This isn’t Reddit. Tired, cliche quips like “amiriteoramirite”, memes, and personal attacks are generally frowned upon because they are low-effort. These people are writers and get inundated with “your writing isn’t good enough” every fucking day. You will notice people don’t point out typos. They also don’t take kindly to people who aren’t brave enough to post their own work who then take shots at others. Shitty criticism doesn’t go over well here and will get you blocked. If you have a *constructive* criticism, you need to be careful in how you present it. For instance, your comment would have been better received had you presented it like, “Your personal experience was a moving read, but I would have liked you to include the evolutionary psychology perspective.” See the difference, Jeff?
  2. When you don’t care for the topic, don’t feel the writer did a good job, or you thought the presentation could be better, most people skip it when it is a first-person account. There are quite a few people on here who are struggling with mental health issues and are clearly on the edge. Attacking people doesn’t help them become a better writer. You have no idea what that person is going through and why they wrote that piece. We try to make this a welcoming place for everyone. You will very rarely see negative comments, and usually those are reserved for articles that are presented as journalism, veiled advertising, pure propaganda, or in response to comments that are not very nice.
  3. Medium publishes almost everything. There are first person accounts like Jeff Bezos’ response to an alleged extortion attempt. You can find tons of poetry and journals. There are thought pieces, propaganda, and campaign materials. I have seen erotica, fantasy, and works of fiction. Not everything here is journalism.
  4. Don’t be a dick.
