Why we are not shocked by the drama surrounding Kim Kardashian’s divorce

In February of 2021, Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kanye “Ye” West.
Such a high-profile breakup has taught the world that despite Kardashian’s billions and a family empire, she could not protect herself from being harassed by a man she had rejected.
West accused the mother of four of “antagonizing” him and preventing his access to the kids. He has implied Kim was wrong to allow their child, North, to appear in a Tiktok video with her mother “against his will.”
West has persisted in his very public attacks, at times switching to pleas for reconciliation during performances as if his ex was a lost possession and that he could demand its return.
In a move many women recognize from their own desperate breakups, Kim attempted to diffuse attacks about the children with a polite request, responding back,
“Please stop with this narrative, you were just here this morning picking up the kids for school.”
To a bystander, it feels like Kim is picking her words carefully — no doubt because she is painfully aware that she doesn’t only have to worry about her ex husband, but his legions of adoring fans.
Despite Kim’s clear signals she intends to move on, it seems West is more interested in rapping about beating her boyfriend’s ass or dragging Kim to court in a lingering custody battle.

Women are familiar with these types of allegations and abuse during a breakup — the threats, smear campaigns and social isolation are familiar — except their drama doesn’t usually play out in tabloid publications with daily gossip updates.
