New York Isn’t Special

Seriously, why do NYers have to convince everyone it is?

Have you ever talked to a NYer about why they live there?

I don’t get the love affair.

When I see movies set in Manhattan, the atmosphere doesn’t appear inviting even when presented in the most idealized circumstances — that is Central Park in spring experienced through the eyes of a character navigating through life from the advantage of tremendous privilege.

Filmmakers usually set the story in a $27 million penthouse carefully curated for viewing pleasure as if this how the average person lives.

How many films feature a cocktail party with a couple enjoying a conversation on a private balcony overlooking the city? The weather is always perfect, the martini is usually dry, and the beautiful people are wearing formal attire because it’s normal for your friends to host black tie weekend parties.

The setting always has to be romanticized.

Recently in an online forum, I mentioned my dislike of New York, and someone in the comments got very upset. In the course of trying to convince me that the city is great, they claimed New York didn’t have a high cost of living. Seriously.
