I have the half-assed, good enough approach. The idea is to never completely give up and to at least maintain some of your gains.
It’s an argument for when I don’t want to do what I know I should. It’s for those times when you get stuck in black or white thinking. Like, “If I am not going to walk two miles, I might as well not go.”
It’s doing ANY of it. Don’t want to walk two-miles, do a quarter mile. Going to order tacos instead of cooking? Get a side salad, too. Because it’s much easier to maintain the half-assed approach to anything.
As far as exercise, I have a bare minimum 15-minute weight lifting routine I do 5 times a week. It’s the things I need to do for keeping my back in shape. I add cardio in when I can. When I feel better, I do more.
It’s slow going but it works.
